Machines (steam and gas turbines, compressors, generators, etc.) that are degraded after several years of operation demand specialized assessment for reliability - probability of being available for operation, with no failures, over a pre-determined period of time - of several components (rotors, casing, blades, etc.). This kind of investigation is done through studying the equipment's historic data (start-up and shutdown), and carrying out metallurgical evaluations, destructive and non-destructive tests, and modeling of components and failures, with the use of finite elements.

The fundamental importance of a life assessment study is in the resulting economy that comes from not prematurely replacing components that are still in conditions for operation, and more durability of the machine.
